Once you become a resident in Spain, relying on your foreign driver's license suddenly comes with an expiration date.
The DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) dictates that foreigners living in Spain must exchange their foreign license for a Spanish one, or otherwise obtain a Spanish license via the standard testing channels.
The Six-Month Rule
From the moment you acquire residency in Spain, you have exactly six months to drive using your foreign license (or International Driving Permit). After that six-month period, your original license is no longer valid on Spanish roads. If the Guardia Civil pulls you over, you can face heavy fines and potential impounding of the vehicle.

Can you simply 'swap' your license (Canje)?
This depends entirely on your nationality and whether your home country holds a bilateral agreement with Spain.
1. EU/EEA Citizens: You are allowed to drive on your EU license indefinitely, provided it doesn't expire. However, once you reside in Spain, you must register it with the DGT. If your EU license expires, or you commit a traffic offense, you will be forced to exchange it for a Spanish one.
2. Countries with Bilateral Agreements: Many countries (including the UK, Switzerland, Brazil, Colombia, and Japan) hold bilateral agreements with Spain. This allows citizens of these countries to 'swap' (canjear) their license for a Spanish one via an administrative process, without taking a test.
3. Countries without Agreements (e.g., USA, Canada, Australia): Unfortunately, there is no agreement. Your license is effectively invalid after six months. You must attend an autoescuela (driving school) in Spain, pass a grueling theoretical exam (available in English, though poorly translated), and pass a practical driving exam in a manual car (unless you specifically request an automatic, which restricts your license to automatics only).
The UK Agreement
Post-Brexit, the UK and Spain finally reached a permanent agreement. UK license holders residing in Spain can once again exchange their licenses without passing a Spanish driving test.
The Canje Appointment Nightmare
If you are lucky enough to be from a country with an agreement, the battle is not over. Securing a Cita Previa for the DGT to exchange your license is notoriously difficult, with some regions experiencing backlog delays of up to six months. You must pass a standard medical/psychotechnical test beforehand.
